BISTRE - TINTED BISTRES

Description

Bistre is a very old pigment, which was used as early as the XIV century in manuscripts; it was originally made from burnt walnut shells, now it is made from amorphous brown coal.

Coloured bistre is a composition of water-soluble pigment used to create other brown shades.

Characteristics

Bistre consists of black flakes which are perfectly soluble in water.

Bistre is a cheap pigment for the production of brown paper and cardboard. In the wood industry, bistre is used as a cheap and excellent water-soluble wood tint, which has a good water resistance after drying.

Coloured bistre comes in different colours like yellow, red, blue, green, brown and black. The colour is always brown (because of the bistre) with a tone (yellow, red, etc.) in the pigment.

The UV- and weather resistance of coloured bistre is not as good as that of bistre, because the stability of organic pigments is not very good.
